When considering how I’m going to layout my magazine article I have looked at several different photo story layouts and looked at some websites which provide examples of successful and unsuccessful magazine layouts. One of these websites is http://www.magazinedesigning.com/magazine-spreads-good-bad-practices/ .
This is an example of a bad layout:
It’s considered a bad layout because the flow of the text is not natural. The reader’s eyes should naturally move from one block of text to the next and that’s difficult with this layout. The way images have been placed breaks up the text, making the article look unorganised and disjointed.
It is also important to consider the placement of the headline of the article because this is what the reader will look for first. The main body of text should follow on naturally from the headline. In this example the headline has been placed underneath the photo which works well because the reader will look at the image, read the headline and then move over onto the next page to read the rest of the article.
I am thinking of following a similar style of layout in my magazine article, however I think I’m going to use a full bleed photo on the opening page and then place the headline within some negative space. I’m also planning on putting an image on the top half of the second page too.
