Laurent Roche is a street photographer from France. I think that his work could be used to influence mine because he works a lot with brightly coloured clothing/ backgrounds alongside plenty of negative space.
This photo below is a good example of this, I particularly like how the subjects are very well lit whist the background behind them is in shadow. The red clothing being worn by the subjects is an important element of the image, if they had been wearing darker colours then the image wouldn’t have been quite as effective. The quality of light in this photograph would suggest that it was taken during the evening because the shadow of the sign post is so tall.
The timing of this photograph is key, Roche has managed to capture the subject just before she steps into shadow. There are 2 subjects in this image, both of whom are wearing pink and are walking towards each other, resulting in a mirroring effect. Again the use of light in this photograph is strong, I would presume it is evening light rather than early morning light.
Similar to the style of photo I’m going for this one depicts a woman in bright green clothing stood against a grey background. However I would argue that the grey isn’t necessarily negative space because you’re able to see police officers standing behind it. There is quite a bit of context in this image suggesting that the woman is part of a protest.
This image is interesting because it only includes a small part of the subject, there is very little context provided, only the top of a man’s head and an orange balloon.
The lighting in this image is very extreme, leaving a large proportion of the frame in darkness. The subjects are interesting with good facial expressions, it’s not clear whether the woman is associated with the man and the child as she seems to be walking ahead of them. The man and the child appear to be affected by the bright sunlight.
I like how the subjects in this photo have been framed by the shadows, following the pattern of the previous images I think that this one was shot using evening light and similarly to the first photograph the subject has been lit by the direct sunlight whilst the background behind him is in shadow.
The striking blue in this photograph is very effective, making the white bird stand out against it, as ell as the arm of the only person in the frame.
This image is probably closes to the kind of style I am aiming for in my own work. I like in this image how the clothing being worn on the top half of the subject are similar to the wall behind them whilst their jeans contrast with it. I also like that the subjects face is not visible.
